This is the end

I just wanted to say that i really enjoyed this class. This was my first online class and i had been a little nervous about taking it. There was no peer or teacher interaction and i was worried i would forget about it. However, in the end that was untrue. I feel like through the blogs and WebCT we have had a lot of virtual interaction and i ended up being very interested in the topics and never forgot to do my work. This was a very interesting way of learning, although i still prefer being in the classroom, and felt I have taken a lot from this class. Not only did we learn about global communications and networks, we used them and became part of them. We have been practicing skills for the future. A question about this was on my GRE test and i got so excited because i knew i had learned so much from this class. So in the end i really enjoyed the class and feel i have learn a lot about global communications and can take that knowledge and apply it to whatever job i get.

the jewish week

The ethnic paper I looked at was the Jewish Week. It is nothing super, simple color and style choices, that are almost kind of dull. The letter is orange with blue on a simple white back ground. It is a pretty neat web paper anyway. lots of cool links and articles that focus on the jewish culture. one of the neat things was there was a whole article about the Imus issue. There is a lot of bad feelings amongst the jewish community because Imus is jewish. it was pretty interesting to see the story from a different culture's point of view. They feel that this is going to be super negative for jewish comedians and that they are going to have to hold their tongues now. the paper also covered a lot of the issues in the middle east. it also had blogs for singles and a lot of other things for people in the jewish community. i thought it was a very good paper even with its lack of style and layout.

Irish Echo Online Newspaper

Opening the webpage of Irish Echo, I first noticed the green color theme that was present. Obviously, green fits the Irish webpage well.

I was pretty disapointed with one of the articles on the website that had to do with the Virgina Tech massacre. It discussed how a group of Irish students "lucked out" by not being harmed during the shootings. It says "Call it fate, luck, whatever. A day or two later and a group of Irish students at VTech might have found themselves even closer to Monday's bloody massacre." I think that it is very selfish that this article is focusing on how Irish students escaped from being hurt during the massacre, when instead they should be paying respect to those who were not able to survive the massacre. Yes, it is great that these Irish students survived, but they should not be in the spotlight when 32 other innocent victims were killed. Instead, it would have been nice to see this Irish newspaper pay respect to those victims who were killed and their families, Irish or not.

Boston Betting on "Dice-K"

I think its great that different cultures have newspapers and reading specifically focused on the ethnic views of the culture. I looked at the Asian Newsweek; it’s interesting to find all the activities that bring the Asian culture to America. Its great to experience different cultures and learn about them. The article I read is by A. J. Hayes, 2007 Baseball Preview: Boston Betting on "Dice-K." This article is about Dice-K being bought by the Red Sox, and how Japan is more than angry with “their best talents fleeing to America.” From Japan's point of view they, think it is "exorbitant" that America is spending over $150 million on Japanese imports. The article also says that the players are well worth the money but America is only doing it to draw Japanese headliners.

Killings in Afghanistan

"Report says insurgent killings of civilians in Afghanistan up" by Laura King, was found in the Boston Globe. The article talked about the increase in killings in Afghanistan and about how most of the time the victims end up being civilians and not officials or other people in power. It was a very interesting article that went into detail about the recent increase in civilians deaths in Afghanistan. There were some parts that seemed to focus on the american point of view at the beginning and end, but the middle really seemed to capture the local point of view. there was a quote from a 9 year old year who had been injured and through her words you got a sense of the culture and the people. There were other quotes from people who were frightened and wanted the government to do something. It was a very good piece but you could tell it wasn't written from someone who was writing a local piece. However you got the sense of how bad it is in Afghanistan and it did seem to, at points, connect with the local view.

NY Times Russias Polar Bears

This article written by Steven Lee Myers is about the method of now being able to hunt polar bears legally to prevent from human contact, in which there has been more of due to Russia's change in climate. Even with the rapid decrease in the Polar Bear population, this legal hunting law of allowing legal hunting of Polar Bears hopes to reduce the amount of poaching in Russia; however, the bears have been spotted on shore, where they have no choice but to look for food due to the shrinking of sea ice of which they live on and are subject to be killed because of the danger they are to humans. The local point of view is captured by through the eyes of Russians who live in the town, where they say this would only restore a tradition forced under ground after the Soviet ban went into effect. Most of the villagers feel this way, but some believe that the Polar Bear population will be extinct in 50 years, because of this legal hunting.

'Blast Rocks Iraqi Parliment" - Written By New York Times/ Associated Press

The story goes in depth of how an Iraqi sucider bomber killed 8 people and leaving 23 wounded yesterday in a deadly the blast. The article also said "all Iraqis are targeted." The story takes on a partial window view as the reporter, whos name was not mentioned wasnt there to actually see the blast. It seems that the article is assumption based at parts and aims to scare Iraqi people. It was interesting to see an International article on an American newspaper.

Dallas Morning News

"Egyptian pharaoh's locks were stolen, put up for sale online" 10:55 PM CDT on Tuesday, April 10, 2007 by the Associated Press. This article gives all the facts and is interesting because the types of things that are sold on e-bay always amuse Americans. The article does not say where online the hair of the 3,200 year-old mummy is being sold. Its just one of those odd unusual things that people do to get money. As a local point of view it really doesn’t relate or capture it.
